Functional Electrical Stimulation
FES can be effective in restoring muscle actions where movement has been lost due to nerve injury or disease within the brain or spinal cord. Small electrical currents act upon the muscles and nerves and movement occurs as a result.
The most common use of FES is for the correction of drop foot to help improve walking ability but it can also be used to strengthen and re-educate the movement of other muscles for example in the hand, arm or shoulder.
Many people feel that their walking improves in terms of their ability to walk without catching their foot, reduction of falls, can walk further with less fatigue and can sometimes walk unaided.
